What is Teen Patti?
Teen Patti (meaning "Three Cards" in Hindi/Urdu) is one of the most popular card games in South Asia. It is similar to the British card game "Three Card Brag" and shares some elements with Poker. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck (without jokers in traditional play).
Teen Patti is a game of skill, strategy, and chance that can be played by 3 to 6 players. It is traditionally played during festivals like Diwali and Eid, as well as at social gatherings across Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
How to Set Up the Game
Before starting, players must agree on a minimum stake called the Boot. Each player puts the boot amount into the pot (the central pool of money). This creates the initial prize pool that the winner will collect.
One player is designated as the dealer. The dealer shuffles the 52-card deck and deals 3 cards face-down to each player, going clockwise.
Blind and Seen Players
After cards are dealt, each player can choose to be a Blind player or a Seen player:
- Blind Player: Does not look at their cards. Bets at half the current stake.
- Seen Player: Has looked at their cards. Must bet at the full current stake.
You can choose to look at your cards at any time, but once you look, you become a Seen player for the rest of that round.
Betting Rounds
Play proceeds clockwise. On each player's turn, they must either Chaal (continue playing by placing a bet) or Pack/Fold (give up their cards and exit the round).
Betting rules:
- A Blind player must bet at least the current stake and at most twice the stake
- A Seen player must bet at least twice the current stake and at most four times the stake
- If a Blind player bets, the new stake becomes that bet amount
- If a Seen player bets, the new stake is half their bet amount
Sideshow (Compromise)
A Seen player can request a Sideshow with the previous player (who must also be a Seen player). If the other player agrees, both compare their cards privately. The player with the lower hand must fold. If the hands are equal, the player who requested the sideshow must fold.
If the previous player refuses the sideshow request, play continues normally.
The Showdown
The game continues until only two players remain. At this point, either player can call for a Show by paying the required amount. Both players reveal their cards, and the player with the higher-ranked hand wins the entire pot.
If a Seen player calls show against a Blind player, the Blind player does not need to pay — the Seen player pays double the current stake for the show.
